The Boat Museum Society

About the BMS

The roots of the National Waterways Museum, Ellesmere Port lie back in the 1970s with a group of enthusiasts, initially the North West Museum of Inland Navigation, later The Boat Museum Society, who worked to set up the museum and begin the boat collection there.

Today the Boat Museum Society continues to be based at the National Waterways Museum, Ellesmere Port. Its members are closely involved in developing and running the museum, and in particular the BMS provides vital help with training, supporting and co-ordinating volunteers.

A particular focus for the Society is researching, restoring and exhibiting the working craft of the British canal and river network, and demonstrating their proper use.

The Boat Museum Society is passionate about preserving some of the professional skills of the people who built, used and maintained these boats.
