Things to do for a great family day out

A great family day out with loads to see and do

National Waterways Museum gives children a superb introduction to the world of canals and waterways. Our rich collections, fleets of boats, and the atmospheric historic site really capture children's imaginations. It's a great family day out too - for grandparents and parents too.

There's loads of space for kids to run around and explore as well as quiet corners for picnics or just for watching the world go by. There are games to play and displays packed with fascinating information to browse. All ages will find things of interest and enjoyment to see and do.

There's a wet weather picnic area, high chairs in the café and good baby changing facilities. And the Café is a great place for family and friends to come together at the end of the day and swop stories about their day out at the museum.

Our top tips for a great family day out

Pick up a site plan and prepare your family for adventure!

  • take a boat trip on the Shropshire Union Canal
  • let off steam in the large soft play area
  • explore inside historic boats - imagine how your family would have lived in this tiny space!
  • design your own narrow boat
  • see locks in action and maybe even get to help out!
  • try out cunning mechanical models
  • fire up a gleaming steam engine
  • test out your family's skills and play Victorian games together.

Events and activities
